MEYER TIMBER WAREHOUSE

This project presented the unique opportunity to design and construct a 20,000m2 warehouse for clients in the timber wholesale business.Despite being a relatively standard warehouse layout, the use of timber for the entire construction was an unconventional move aimed at highlighting its potential in projects usually reserved for steel.

Specialised Timber Fabrication constructed box-beam portal frames from Hyspan LVL, with a span of 32m and bay spacing of 15m.3 of these box beam grids fitted together along the width of the warehouse to span an almost 100m distance. Over 1000m3 of LVL and plywood was used during fabrication.

This project was awarded the 2018 Innovative Structural Design from the Timber Design Award.

The eight-storey Administration and Media building will be situated between the current function centre and the Jolimont rail yards, creating a new northern face for the sporting precinct that will be seen by tens of thousands of rail commuters every day.

“The redevelopment of Melbourne Park will see significant improvements for those attending the many sporting and cultural events held in this precinct each year. The redevelopment will also provide long-term security for the Australian Open event,” said Hassell’s principal, Glenn Scott.

“Our concept creates connections with the many event and sporting venues at Melbourne Park, where many existing structures also comprise a solid base, focused views and large protective roofs.”

With a nominal gross area of 8,700sqm, the building is part of stage two of the $700 million redevelopment of Melbourne Park, which also includes refurbishments to Rod Laver Arena by Cox Architecture and a footbridge over Batman Avenue designed by John Wardle Architects and NADAAA in collaboration.

Work has commenced on site, with completion expected in 2016.

FACTORY OF THE FUTURE

Dome_01.jpg
Dome_02.jpg

As one of the most original timber projects Specialised Timber Fabrication have undertaken, the eye-catching Swinburne “Factory of the Future” dome was constructed completely out of prefabricated timber elements; from a curved timber substructure with curved timber ply skin covering it.

The structure was modelled in Finite Element software and detailed with both standard framing connectors, custom brackets and innovative self-drilling screws up to 400mm in length. The LVL ribs were precisely CNC cut on all sides, while the 2-way curved plywood panels were laminated on a custom jig to develop the complex curvature.

The "Factory of the Future" received the 2015 Australian Timber Design award in the ‘Excellence in the Use of Timber Products – Timber Panels’ category.

Located in an established suburb of Melbourne, The Courtyard and Garden House has a compact, modest footprint and has been sensitively sited to retain existing trees. This approach is the antithesis of many large new developments in the area that erase important existing ‘backyard’ ecologies.

The new family home is carefully organised around a courtyard, allowing for a variety of flexible, separate living areas and open space zones, creating a series of serene, light filled spaces with a strong connection to landscape. FCS certified Australian hardwood timbers have been used throughout the home, and visual site lines are created towards the double height living area and mezzanine library, with a sculptural timber lined ceiling assisting with strengthening this visual connection.

Materials were chosen for their warmth and enduring qualities, ensuring longevity for my clients forever home.

Courtyard and Garden House by Delia Teschendorff Architecture is a new home that exemplifies the integration of sustainability, flexibility, and aesthetic beauty. This home manages to respect and preserve the natural environment while providing a versatile living space for a modern family.

The U-shaped design wraps around a central north-facing courtyard. It means the owners get to enjoy the outdoors which feel more like an extension of their internal spaces. It lets winter light deep into the home which wouldn't have been possible with a more conventional design.
